Paris Texas was the title of a film by Wim Wenders. Paris Νew Υork is the title of a website which compares the two large cities in an artistic way. One is in Europe, the other in the US but they are both lively, full of young people adoring them, but also full of poverty in their outskirts. So it is a sort of competition, as explains the creator of the site, Vahram Muratyan. A friendly competition that is. Muratyan loves both cities and tries to spot the details which make them so special, along with the cliches accompanying them for decades and their contradictions.
A tourist will usually visit Manhattan with its impressive skyscrapers, the city of New York with its rivers and long bridges, will admire the shops of 5th Avenue where so many films and series have as background. Most probably he or she will also go to the Met, the Opera and to the Metropolitan Museum but will ignore Harlem and the Bronx or other places where poverty and misery reign. The same goes for Paris where visitors walk along the Seine, go window shopping in front of haute couture and jewel stores, have a coffee at Deux Magots but certainly don’t visit the banlieu, the suburbs with their horrible buildings where emigrants abide. (The recent french film Untouchable gave us a taste of these ugly housing projects. It was based on a true story).
Let’s return to V. Muratyan, who published his sketches on the comparisοn of the two cities in a book. In a pleasant video clip by Tony Miotto you can also watch the friendly game between Paris and NY and decide which one is the winner!
