At downtown Brussels, near the famous Grand Place where a flower show takes place once a year, a hotel called Mozart, offers every winter some of its rooms to the homeless. The initiative was taken by the owner, Ahmed Ben Abderrahmane, who with help of the staff, gives the opportunity to a group of people to find a shelter during the coldest and less touristic months, and gather their powers towards a better social and financial life. His philanthropic philosophy may seem strange to his colleague but the public and the Press have taken a liking to him and have spoken highly of his work. The regular clients who pay 90 euros per night, are not at all disturbed by this aspect, on the contrary they are all for it. The queen of Belgium herself as well as the country’s prime minister support Abderrahmane whose only request to the homeless is not to be loud and disturb his clients.
Young homeless people are for a young American called Wil Reynolds, very important. For that reason, on November 15, Wil abandoned the comforts of his home and spent a night in the open in order to raise awareness to a social problem. He wanted to emphasize the fact that young people up to 17 years of age are being taken caren of by the government in the US but when they turn 18 they must fend for themselves. He made this symbolic gesture which brought 10 thousand dollars from donations which will support Covenant House, an institution that helps the young and the homeless.
